With the development of photography, the way people look at the world changed. Before, only painters documented peoples’ lives visually, but with the advent of photography, anyone and everyone could capture an image. And that image: what power it has! It can entertain us, educate us, or simply help us relive cherished memories. As a tool and an art, photography, for kids, is explored in this issue, starting with its beginnings in 1827, when Joseph Niepce, after years of trying, found the right mix of light-sensitive chemicals to produce the first photographic image. After that, kids will learn, innovations and improvements in the camera took us from the shiny metal daguerreotypes of the 1840s to the digital images we use today.

The many uses of photography, for kids, are also highlighted here, from photos used in newspapers and X-rays to images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Next, the inner workings of the basic single-lens reflex camera are covered, as well some key concepts, like exposure, composition, and lighting. Kids will also look at the way photography changed the art world – and became an art itself through the work of masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ansel Adams. And after this exploration of photography, kids will surely be inspired to make the simple box camera featured on the last page of the issue!
